This guide is for the owner, CMO or commercial director approving investment and evaluating a provider. It is not an Ads Manager button tutorial. We use the context of a Buenos Aires service business; the method can be adapted to another operation with its own records.
Our Argentina launch news explains the October 21 change. Before acting, check availability for your billed entity and conditions for your offer. Here we answer a separate question: what must the business learn and recover to justify an experiment alongside its existing acquisition?
Start with a buying decision, not a platform
Choose an offer you can deliver and a genuine buyer question. A company comparing preventive maintenance across its branches needs to understand coverage, scope, timing, responsibility and terms before requesting a proposal. That conversation suggests a contextual advertising hypothesis; it does not establish sufficient demand inside ChatGPT.
Review actual sales questions and reasons for choosing. If most purchases depend on immediate proximity, recommendations or a visual demonstration, local search, partnerships, direct sales or Meta Ads may be better priorities. If the market consists of ten known buyers, speaking to them may teach more than funding anonymous traffic. An attractive channel description is not an obligation to use it.
The landing page must support the decision: what you solve, whom you serve, what is included, which conditions change the price and what happens after a request. A page offering comprehensive solutions is insufficient. Someone should be able to rule themselves out or move forward with useful information, without sales having to explain everything the ad omitted.
Agree a question worth funding: are we receiving opportunities the team can serve whose value covers the full cost? Record the alternative if the answer is no. The work may conclude that maintaining Meta Ads or repairing follow-up is preferable to opening another campaign.
Ads, organic referrals and customers need separate records
An ad is a paid placement; it cannot buy a recommendation in the answer, according to OpenAI. If a visit in your records carries utm_source=chatgpt.com, that parameter alone does not identify a paid campaign. Verify its origin and keep organic referrals separate from your ad URLs.
Context hints guide ad selection but are not exact-match keywords and cannot guarantee a particular conversation. OpenAI also notes that review crawlers can visit destinations with tracking parameters; these are not billable ad clicks. Analytics sessions, clicks and people received should not be treated as equivalent.
Use separate labels and retain unknown source when evidence is missing. An observed mention needs a date, question, language and URL so it can be checked; it is not traffic. A visit is not an inquiry. A click opening WhatsApp does not establish a received message. The commercial record begins when your business receives a contact and can recognize the person without duplicating them.
If someone arrives through ChatGPT and returns through a Meta campaign, record both interactions where supported. Do not count a complete new customer for each channel. Show an operational attribution view alongside a consolidated view of people and costs. Neither independently proves how much would have happened without advertising.
Tool one: readiness to fund an experiment
Mark each row yes, no or unknown, with a supporting document or record. This is ALTO ROI's management decision aid, not platform certification. The accountable person can delegate tasks but must be able to explain the evidence.
Scroll to read decision owners and actions.
| Condition | Required input | Owner | Action if missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible access and offer | Entity, category, account status and review | Leadership and administration | Do not launch until clarified |
| Identified purchase decision | Real questions and reasons to choose or reject | Sales and product | Research; compare Meta, search or direct selling |
| Useful destination | Understandable offer, scope, restrictions and contact | Marketing and product | Fix the page before paying for visits |
| Commercial learning possible | Source, unique people, qualification and outcomes | Analytics and sales | Repair records and reception |
| Capacity and cash | Queue owner, hours, full costs and payment dates | Sales leadership and finance | Constrain or postpone; do not fund a bottleneck |
Tool two: what the test needs to recover
Define M as media, F as management, O as incremental production and inquiry handling, C as a new customer's contribution after variable fulfillment costs, and p as the share of qualified opportunities becoming net new customers, using the same period to observe payments and refunds. Use one period and currency, and allocate shared costs before inspecting the outcome.
Planning uses Q minimum = ceil((M + F + O) / (p × C)). This is an opportunity threshold under assumptions, not a guarantee. If p or C is unknown, there is no honest result to calculate. Measure first or write explicit scenarios. A rate found in an article cannot become an observation from your business.
A wholly fictional USD example uses M = 1,000, F = 400 and O = 150, totaling 1,550. The 150 includes 80 for production and 70 for extra handling, neither counted again in C. Assume C = 650 and p = 20%, drawn from a hypothetical earlier mature cohort for the same offer. These are teaching figures, not our rates or expected ChatGPT Ads costs.
Expected contribution per opportunity is 0.20 × 650 = 130. The threshold is ceil(1,550 / 130) = 12. Ten opportunities imply modeled contribution of 1,300 and a −250 balance; fifteen imply 1,950 and +400 before excluded overhead and taxes. A fractional customer in an expectation is not an actual sale.
Observed recovery requires ceil(1,550 / 650) = three customers with that confirmed contribution: two leave −250, three leave +400. Twelve opportunities do not guarantee those three wins. Recalculate when contribution falls, inquiry mix changes or sales cost increases. This distinction prevents calling a cohort profitable merely because an assumed probability suggested it would be.
OpenAI does not provide general cross-industry performance benchmarks to substitute for business records. Our advertising profitability map can organize wider economics; this worksheet decides a specific experiment and is not another calculator.
Tool three: reconcile observations before calculating CAC
Continue with an invented cohort that has had enough time to mature. This table tests a different kind of evidence: what the business receives and confirms. It does not follow automatically from the planning model. We retain the same full cost of 1,550 to compare planning with observation.
Suppose the platform reports 36 conversions while 32 records were actually received. Four remain unresolved; do not declare them fraud, duplicates or technical loss without investigation. Two of the 32 records repeat people, leaving thirty unique people. Fifteen qualify; four pay and one purchase is fully refunded, leaving three net customers.
Platform CPL would be 1,000/36 = 27.78, while media cost per unique person received is 1,000/30 = 33.33. Full CAC per net customer is 1,550/3 = 516.67. All three figures are correct for different denominators. Reporting only the first cannot justify scaling.
| Record | Count / amount | Evidence to check |
|---|---|---|
| Platform conversions | 36 | Saved event, dates and attribution definition |
| Received records → unique people | 32 → 30 | Two repeats; four platform conversions unreconciled |
| Qualified opportunities | 15 | Agreed need, service area and buying-fit criteria |
| Paid → net customers | 4 → 3 | One full refund; exclude the reversed payment |
| Contribution before acquisition | 3 × 650 = 1,950 | Variable costs and refund effects already included |
| Balance after included acquisition costs | 1,950 − 1,550 = 400 | Before excluded overhead and taxes; no causal claim |
Your cash ceiling may differ from the displayed budget
OpenAI billing documentation describes impression or click buying and conversion optimization options: you do not pay exclusively for a sale. A campaign-total budget limits that campaign's media. Management, production, tools and applicable charges require separate lines.
Daily budgets are averages: an unchanged amount can allow up to 2× on a day and 7× in the applicable week. The week follows the account time zone; budget edits affect the limits. Do not interpret it as a rigid daily cap or an arbitrary rolling seven-day window.
If finance authorizes one amount for the entire experiment, review campaign-total budget, schedule and account terms before activation. Add commitments across campaigns and other channels: a campaign limit is not a company-wide ceiling. Name who can authorize increases rather than depending on a real-time dashboard to prevent them.
Preserve working capital for fulfillment. A customer paying in sixty days does not fund today's advertising invoice. The 30/60-day cash guide helps compare commitments and dates; it does not replace this experiment's commercial decision.
What to take from the webinar and request from a provider
In the official webinar transcript, OpenAI prioritizes measurement, meaningful objectives and campaign conditions that support learning. It presents Pixel and Conversions API and demonstrates a fictional headphone brand. For a service-business owner, the application is to request validation of the complete inquiry journey before funding traffic, rather than copy a catalog demonstration.
Conversion-optimized campaigns require measurement and an eligible standard event. Billing can use impressions or clicks, with different conversion sets informing each option. Ask a provider to document the event and attribution instead of treating a different reported CPA as automatic evidence of additional customers.
The measurement deliverable should confirm that an inquiry reaches the authorized system, that reporting the same event from two places does not duplicate it, and that sales can update the outcome. Do not send private conversations or unnecessary customer data for a more complete dashboard. Review data-handling and transmission conditions before connecting systems.
Choose an observation date based on your sales cycle. Show open, lost, paid and refunded outcomes by entry cohort. An accepted quote without payment is not available cash; a recent opportunity is not automatically a loss. With small volumes, present counts and limited decisions rather than invented statistical precision.
Continue, repair, stop or retain Meta Ads
Before launch, the owner approves affordable exposure and evidence required for another stage. The provider retains ads, spend and change history; sales validates reception, qualification and outcomes; finance confirms contribution and cash. None can substitute for the evidence owned by another team.
When there are only clicks, inspect delivery, message and destination before declaring absent demand. If inquiries miss the profile, review offer and clarity. When suitable opportunities go unanswered, repair coverage. If mature outcomes cannot meet the business's full-cost limit, stop or redesign. A rejected hypothesis can still be a useful outcome of a bounded experiment.
A positive cohort permits consideration of another stage rather than a promise of scale. Review repeated quality, sales capacity, costs and refunds. Disclose inability to isolate effects from other channels. The experiment can conclude that retaining Meta Ads management, improving follow-up or using direct selling is preferable. There is no universal period for proving profitability.
The answer should be complete before you contact us. For an outside assessment, bring your offer, markets, costs and aggregated outcomes. The free initial 30–45 minute conversation and subsequent execution are different stages. The client funds media; scope, production and management terms are agreed before implementation.
Frequently asked questions
What does ALTO ROI charge for this work?
This guide does not quote a fee. Scope and terms follow an assessment. The USD figures are invented to reproduce a decision, not a quotation or a platform minimum.
Can I treat twelve contacts as a guaranteed target?
No. They are twelve qualified opportunities under a hypothetical close probability, not twelve contacts or guaranteed wins. With this example's costs and contribution, actual recovery requires three net customers. Show pending outcomes and refunds too.
Does an attributed conversion prove an additional sale?
No. Confirm the customer in business records and distinguish attribution from causality. An incremental test needs appropriate design and volume; subtracting two CPL figures does not provide it.
